San Felipe Travelogue

Picture of a beach in Baja

BajaRealEstateGroup.net

Great week in San Felipe last week. Never been there before. We stayed at Bill and Kathy’s place in Bahia Sta. Maria and made a trip to Laguna Percibu. This is Baja 1000 country. Learned a bunch about how the tides work and how they affect the wind. Bill and Kathy were great hosts, we enjoyed visiting with them and all other the expats around the area. We ate loads of local seafood. Shrimp caught within eyesight. Posting notes for future reference. Minor war stories: Spent a good part of the drive with the “Check Engine” light on. Turns out the guys who checked out the car before we left didn’t check the oil. Bought 3 quarts in San Felipe for about US$3.50 each. Not bad. Learned that if you unplug the negative terminal from your battery for a while, the “check engine” will go out. CDMA cell phones don’t work down here. Bought a GSM phone for $35 that had $35 worth of airtime on it. Found an Internet Cafe’ on the north side of town near the boardwalk. Wind squall came up one night such that sand was blowing up on the deck where we were trying to sleep. Had to sleep downstairs that night. It also blew against the shutters causing them to slam into the window and break the glass on the makai side of the house. Well planned and executed quick trip except we brought way too much food and clothing but probably not enough water.

Carlsbad Grand Prix (Inaugural 2013)

So I’ve been out of the loop… Turns out there’s a big-deal bike race on the street where I work. Swami’s Cycle Club and Hoehn motors sponsor it. Andy McClure is all over the poster.

Neon to Nature Bike (West Las Vegas)

Saturday was a ride from the hotel to Charleston West. (Neon to Nature Trail) Here are the directions for someone staying in lodgings west of the 15 on Tropicana and wanting to ride from their hotel. Find a way to get to Hacienda (one long block south of Tropicana). We used S.Jones.
+ Ride in Bike Lane Hacienda(right) for 3 or so miles.
+ Hacienda “T”s at S.Durango (right) for .5 miles
+ Busy intersection W.Tropicana (left) for 1 mile
+ Just past FWY 215 N find the Beltway Bike Trail (right)
+ Follow this trail (Neon to Nature) up to Charleston and make a left until Red Rock.

Red Rock Canyon Tandem

Friday’s ride started with a drive up to the base of Red Rock Canyon. Compared to the drive in to Vegas from San Diego it wasn’t too bad, but it still took 1/2 hour to get there. Took the 215 to Charleston West up to the BLM gate, paid our $7, and unracked the bike.
This was a challenging ride. Temperature was pretty nice, about 78F. The ride starts out with 1000′ elevation rise over 5 miles. Positive attitude: A good way to get the tandem warmed up. Not-so-positive: As far as I can tell, that’s the peak, then we get there, nope – that next one’s got to be the peak. I’m guessing our pace over these five miles was a little less than 10MPH. It would have been a half hour of climbing if we didn’t play tourist. Stopped to take pictures of the red rocks, the Joshua trees, the tourists, the cactus, any excuse to slow down the climb. So that part turned into about an hour of climbing. But once we hit the top, it’s about 10 miles of downhill. Average speed here was a little better than 20MPH. Would have been faster if it weren’t for the tour buses and other cars on the road. Tandem bombing downhill in the desert is great fun and entertaining for the other tourists too. Exhausted by end of  the ride, we napped then got ready for Hector and Kari’s party.

El Tour 2012 – ChuManFoo Report

ChuManFoo and Ms.Kat

It’s been a week now since El Tour.
When asked how it went, we say “we got our money’s worth” (111 miles in 6:37 hours). For those that aren’t familiar: El Tour is a fundraiser ride for a children’s shelter in Tucson. This year was the 30th instance of this event. About $100 per pop. Tandem teams get to pay twice. From the outside it looks like a big bike ride for more than 9000 crazy lycra-clad health freaks. Which is true. On the inside are myriad intricacies: washes, levels, feed zones, drafting, etc. This was our third time at the event. Each of us achieved platinum level in various years but, due to the encroachment of other commitments, we’ve allowed our levels to lapse. This year we started from scratch – in the silver level.

Just Another Saturday on the Tandem

Photo of Thalia Beach Cafe

Bike friendly, healthy, European style food. Good price. Just a touch over 45 miles from home.

While preparing for El Tour de Tucson – Ms.Kat and I chose a northbound route last weekend. My buddy from work, Jim, planned to go with us. As we met him at the local Starbucks, another friend, Steve, decided to ride with us. It was to be a 90-miler. Go until the bike computer says 45 miles for the day, find something to eat, then turn around. Find something to eat we did. While debating if we should go the extra fraction of a mile into Laguna Beach proper, we spotted bikes near a little cafe just down the block. As we rolled in, the cyclists nodded approval, that batch of riders left after a few minutes. We placed our orders and waited for the waitress to bring food out for us when the next group approached. After riding by, all four of them pulled U-turns in heavy traffic in order to get back to join us for lunch. They were a bunch of Canadian guys who were riding the entire coast. Needless to say, the shop is very bike friendly, they serve very healthy food (Ms.Kat is gluten-free). Clean, courteous, etc. After getting home, and doing a bit of research, the owner had opened several restaurants in Laguna, was highly regarded, and was in early phases of spinning this one up. Even if it’s not on a bike ride, I recommend this place to anybody that’s rolling through Laguna. Check out their facebook page.
