Memorial: Jimbo Fandrey

I discovered this post on http://www.surfshot.com this morning (a little bit late). Jimbo was a friend of mine. We surfed some excellent big and small days at Swamis. In the 80s he and I would be some of the first guys out most mornings (we both worked graveyard shift, him at Ralphs and me at Linkabit). He lived in Poway and would do ding work for me and the kids in the church teen group I used to help lead. He recently had cancer surgery and was considered “clean”. His suprise departure leaves me stunned.

Jim rode a knee-board. He was one of the only guys at Swamis that would take time out to hang out with you and talk after a session (nobody talks much before a dawn-patrol – just want to get in the water). Jim was there at Swami’s as much as anybody else but didn’t feel compelled to act like a “local”. He’d share waves. He’d share ideas. Jim will be missed.

James Warren Fandrey Paddle out memorial off Swamis

James Warren Fandrey AKA “The Board Doctor” passed away on September 25th at the age of 57. We are having a Paddle out memorial off Swamis point at 9:00am on Saturday, October 7th.

James Warren Fandrey, 57yr passed away on Monday the 25th of September. This news is a total shock to all of us because he has recently had a physical and was considered to have a clean bill of health. A few days prior to his passing he hit his leg along the varicose vein that stretched along his shin soon after he complained of chest pains but decided to calm down and lay low for a few days. At around 11 o’clock James said that he was tired and decided to go to bed, soon after most likely around 12-3 o’clock in the morning he came out to gain composure. It is believed that he may have been in some discomfort for the reason for coming to the living room. He was found sitting up on the couch with a cup of Calli tea in front of him and the TV on the Discovery channel watching MythBusters or some paid program.
He was 57 years old with a birthday coming on November 22nd.

Come over for the Paddle out memorial off Swamis this Saturday morning.
